The Nursery Sector

The Nursery Industry is in a strong position, and we’d happily discuss the pros and cons of adding a Nursery to your farm, as well as carry out a free Farm Nursery Demand Audit.

To give you a quick round up of the sector:

  • In 2021, there were 1.5 million Ofsted registered Nursery Places in England, split amongst 62,000 providers.
  • Since 2018, there has been a reduction in the number of childminder places, and growth in Nursery Schools or Nurseries part of a group.
  • There were 626,008 live births in 2021, an increase of 1.5% from 2020.
  • The government have aided the Sector’s growth.  In September 2017, England increased preschool grants to 30 hours per week (on the conditions that at least one parents works for at least 16 weekly hours).  In addition, tax free childcare has helped pay the cost of childcare.

Our farm-based nursery’s outperform other nursery sectors

  • Even before covid, parents sought more natural outdoor childcare settings for their children, demonstrated through the rise of forest schools.
  • Occupancy for an established farm-based Nursery settings is 80%, compared to the industry’s 60%.
  • We’ve seen our waiting lists grow coming out of COVID; exacerbated by the desire for parents to see their children in the fresh air, connecting with nature.

Every business has its challenges.  Childcare is quite rightly a regulated business, and our teams need to get the right training and support to maintain and exceed OFSTED standards.  Like many other sectors, recruitment is an issue for childcare, and it is vital to put in place successful recruitment and retention strategies.
